Dr. Judith Resnik was the second American woman astronaut to go into space and the first Jewish astronaut.  Nicknamed “JR” by her crewmates, she served on the first mission of the space shuttle Discovery in 1984.  Tragically, she became the first woman astronaut to die in space when the space shuttle Challenger exploded.
