Physicist Dr. Sally Ride became the first American woman in space on June 18, 1983 as a Challenger crew member for STS-7.  She served on the Challenger again in 1984 and spent more than 343 hours in space.  Dr. Ride would later be instrumental in the investigation of the Challenger explosion.
