Management of the archives changed in 2001 as well. Several years before, Greene had received a promotion to Head of Special Collections at the Rosenberg Library in Galveston, requiring him to scale back to eight hours a month.

Fortunately, UHCL secured permanent funding to hire their first full-time University Archivist, Shelly Henley Kelly. Kelly, a member of the Academy of Certified Archivists, held a Bachelor of Arts from Sam Houston State University and a Master of Science from the University of North Texas.
